Looking for our marketing plan 2009 – 2010?
http://chemainusbcbia.wordpress.com/2009-2010-marketing-plan/

Smart communities, firms and organizations today understand that sharing and collaboration changes everything and grows the economy!  One must shut off the compete at all cost part of our brains to work for and be accountable for the common good. It is the rewiring of our brains for the new paradigm of competiveness.

Our stakeholders, the merchant community in Chemainus, indeed our fellow Chemainus and world citizens can help us grow the business in Chemainus BC. Vancouver Island.

The CBCBIA is all about community building.

The dominant thinking we often hold is one of deficiencies, interests and entitlement. That we have a set of problems to be solved and why don’t “they” fix it or do this or that.

Lets instead restore the experience and vitality of our community, recognize our various interest groups instead of our individual wants, unresearched opinions and needs and bring the right people in the room to talk about possibilities and opportunities.
Lets not have plans and ideas sitting on a shelf but lets take ACTION and then look at how we can make it even better the next time.

We understand, indeed know, that conversation about possibilities builds relatedness and belonging and leads to transformation and economic growth. So please pitch in and give us your constructive idea’s and observations.

We know you like to be informed and want to see progress and this site delivers it:     24/7 Information and input: This blog will inform the BIA stakeholders – membership what is happening in town and what the BIA board is working on in order to improve and market the designated business area in Chemainus.

The site is focused on giving stakeholders and merchants the opportunity to submit input, share ideas and observations; in short communicate with the C.B.C.B.I.A. board. Link to Information for stakeholders .

Valentine escape fun romance

Article in This Sunday’s Times Columnist

BYWARRENGOULDING

SPECIAL TOTHE TIMES COLONIST Can there be a more romantic place on Vancouver Island to

spend Valentine’s Day than Chemainus? Not if your mind is intent on spending some enchanting hours with that

important someone, shopping for a perfect gift, sharing a leisurely meal or enjoying the latest production at the Chemainus Theatre

Festival. Or perhaps strolling through the historic town, admiring the collection of more than 40 murals and sculptures that have put

Chemainus on the international arts and cultural map.

With the trees already in bud and daffodils and tulips pushing through the soil, spring is in the air and whimsical thoughts of

renewal and love – enjoyed by the young and not-so-young – are everywhere in this seaside community.

A stroll down Willow Street, the town’s main boulevard could begin at the Chemainus Senior’s Drop-In Centre, where the

newest mural is being painted on the north wall of the building.

Local artist Lurene Haines is creating the mural, an idyllic portrait of life on a summer day in Chemainus in the 1880s.

Lou Roelofsen, president of the Chemainus Festival of Murals Society, is particularly proud of this latest mural in progress.

“This mural includes women, men, children and First Nations people in costume appropriate for that era in an outdoor gathering

with Mount Brenton in the background.

Talk about romantic!

Continuing down Willow Street, savory coffee and sweet treats beckon. Not to mention Valentine gifts for all tastes and budgets.

There’s the eclectic Ma’s Gifts & Accessories, the marvelous British Allsorts, featuring treats from the United Kingdom, locally made

women’s wear from Degage Fashions. And it only gets better. You’ll want to drop into Gifts ‘n’ Things at the corner of Willow and

Mill, a must-see shop with a huge inventory of beautiful kitchenware, home décor accessories and unique gifts.

A few steps later, you’re into a coffee snob’s paradise … and a chocolate lover’s dream. Caffé Carvaggio’s suggests you “fill your

heart with chocolate” and offers locally hand-crafted chocolates, sugar free treats and special Valentine’s gift baskets.

More sweets? You won’t be disappointed at Hansel & Gretel’s Candy Co.: Valentino Teddy Bears, 1 lb. lollipops, and February’s

feature, Pressed Hugs & Kisses.

The Dancing Bean Café has come up with a super idea for Valentine’s, Blue Valentine’s on Saturday, February 13, an evening

of blues and fine food. “We’re inviting people to enjoy blues with style,” says Mona Kennedy of The Dancing

Bean. “Our menu that night will feature seafood or Mediterranean couples’ platters and our full menu will

be available.” Gary Preston and Anita Bonkowski will deliver a mix of blues on harmonica, keyboards and vocals.

Still on Willow, the newly opened Karen’s Uptown Bistro is offering entrees created with “love and local

products” smiles owner Karen Lockhart.

And as anyone who has visited this beloved, quaint town just a pleasant drive north of Victoria knows,

Chemainus embraces its colourful history. That means a visit to Old Town is in the offing. Some of the more

popular murals are located in Old Town, the neighbourhood close to the ferry terminal. There’s Colin

Williams’ mural of Chemainus Harbour 1910 on Oak Street and

the Paul Marcano mural honouring the irrepressible Chinese entrepreneur

Hong Hing that’s at the corner of Oak and Esplanade.

While you’re in Old Town, the shopping, eating and quaffing options are endless.

If it’s great Asian food you favour, drop into

Ding Ho’s on Oak Street. Bill and Jenny are preparing a special

smorgasbord for February 14, which also happens to be Chinese New Year.

Down Maple Street, on the way to the beach, you’ll find the Twisted Sisters Tea Room, an ideal venue for lunches, dozens of

teas and sweet treats. The Twisties are open til 11 p.m. most nights.

How about taking some time for yourselves with a relaxation massage for two at The Flowering Tree Natural Spa. Great gift

ideas are a way of life at Vancouver Island Soap Factory where Chemainus-made products are perfect Valentine’s gifts.

Valentine’s is a month-long affair at the Chemainus Festival Inn where an elegant and romantic suite, with chocolates on

your pillow, complimentary breakfast and use of the indoor pool and more await guests on any February weekend.

And, of course, there is the smash hit, A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline, now playing at the Chemainus Theatre Festival.

The musical tribute to the iconic country singer runs until February 27.

“Ah, romance. February makes me swoon,” as novelist

Jill Kemerer writes.

Marketing report 2009 – 2010 year.

Chemainus BC BIA – Marketing committee and activity annual report.

January 20 2010

2009 was the first year of the new Chemainus BC BIA;
A. We started our marketing process by first formulating our mandate and terms of reference.

B. followed by reviewing 2008 recorded merchant comments and past year marketing programs.

C. Then by discussing and formulating our committees initial view.

D. Prior to going into marketing planning draft mode we chose to look for tourism marketing guidance from experts in the field.

After that process was complete we submitted a marketing followed by a marketing action plan and budget to the BIA board for approval.

Having determined how much money we had left from the previous BIA, we made some immediate marketing and advertising decisions that related to actions that would be having immediate as well as long term impact on our 2009 marketing and future budgets.

Floral type banners along with frames we ordered and installed at the Island Highway at Henry road along with two new directional impact highway signs.  With the focus on year round color and beautification we also made sure we placed the floral banner programs on the main streets in Chemainus, complimenting the floral and green basket program for year round impact.

We needed to find additional money in order to immediately increase regional marketing for the 2009 marketing decision year and beyond and we received a Tourism Opportunity Grant for $ 19.500 to help us accomplish that.

This grant program gave us matching dollars for regional advertising spending, a new website, numerous experiential video’s, Vancouver Home Show attendance, Chemainus brochures, 3 D signs, Media and other related programs.

We also quickly tuned into what the CVRD was doing and met on several occasions in order to see how we could move marketing via this our regional links.

Early in the spring we completed our August 2009 to August 2010 marketing plan and we have been working ever since to design the right advertising and place the orders in order to be in the right publications and part of the right programs for maximum impact during 2010.

We completed the sales and design of the new 3 dimensional BIA membership map in early spring and produced this new marketing brochure to compliment the 2008 brochure, both are still in use today and will be in use well into 2010. The 3 Dimensional map is also publicly displayed in Old Town and also at Water Wheel Park.

All international and national websites in the entire world that talk or could talk about Chemainus have been scanned and advised about what to write about re Chemainus. For your information Tourism BC’s website ” Hello BC” in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Vancouver Island went from 1 to 17 pages of content on Chemainus.

We have worked as much as possible in partnerships with the Chamber of Commerce, the Festival of Murals Society and the Historical Society, the B&B association and additionally with others, such as Tourism Ladysmith and Wild Play Park in Ladysmith, in order to increase and impact the Chemainus marketing.

During the summer of 2009 we decided for the time being to merge the board and the marketing committee meetings due to the fact that the board was mostly addressing marketing related decisions.

For 2010 we are most definitely planning to once again start at square one and will most likely have a slightly different future and regionally focused marketing approach.  One must constantly learn as to how to be most effective and stay tuned into the times.

Early last summer we decided on reaching out to even more experts and booked Mr. Bill Baker to come talk to the BIA stakeholders and educate us. We had a very successful two day’s and our current adds design was adjusted in line with our findings from the forum and follow up discussions.

From day one we have communicated to our membership – stakeholders via our Chemainus BC Blog and all accomplishments and actions have been constantly posted on this blog. All marketing details are on the blog and can be printed from that location.
The membership committees also hosted several information meetings and that report follows.

We are currently running several regional print campaigns prior to the end of February and we are still on TV the Channel Guide in Victoria and Comox, Courtnay until early summer.  We are on BC Ferries year round with a video and with brochures.

We are also running a times Columnist full page monitor section next month prior to Valentine – you can participate see the info sheets.
On February 11 we are attending a Olympic Media event in Vancouver.
